7 Bridges to Recovery

7 Bridges to Recovery is a non-profit organization that reaches out to the homeless and broken of Atlanta and beyond. We are based off of Isaiah 58:6-8 where God responds to the Israelites in saying, " Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, that you cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh? Then your light shall break forth like the morning, your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard."

It started with God capturing the heart of a man in solitary confinement and giving him the gift of reading as he opened up the Bible for the first time. This man goes by Seven because God told him he was no longer who he used to be but is a new creation and is complete in Him. Since that day, he has gone by Seven. Seven was released from prison 11 years ago, took the Bible literally, and started going under the bridges and into the streets of Atlanta, telling those about the Jesus that had rescued him. He was given a home and started bringing in men right off the streets into the home with him, discipling them and training them up in the Lord. Then women and children started showing up wanting help and God provided the Garden, an old church that has been turned into a home for women and children. Currently today, we house 65 women and about 39 children from all different walks of life. We also have 17 men in a disciplship program that commit a year to the program and serve as our leaders when we go out on the streets. We continue to reach out to those who live out on the streets and our goal is to first and foremost, share Christ with them and also get them off the streets. We pass out food and hygiene items because we know that Christ met physical needs as he met their spiritual needs but we are not an humanitarian group. We know that change can only come from God and His Word.

There are many ways to serve and get involved with 7 Bridges to Recovery if you are interested. It is a family-centered place so people of all ages are welcome. You can help come serve/provide a meal or just hang out with our kids and ladies here. We go out on the streets every Saturday and then sporadically through out the week in the evenings.Recently, some of the ladies from Sovereign Grace made some blankets and I distributed them to an apartment complex that has no heat or electricity and where the residents are just "squatting" and living there without paying rent.(See photos) There are many kids there that we so grateful for a handmade colorful warm blanket.We run completely on faith and donations so keep us in mind when getting rid of things/clothing from your homes. Whatever you have or use in your home, we could use it too, just multiplied by 100! Whatever gift you have or creativity to serve, we would be glad to find a way to get you connected! This week's book highlight is from Tim Challies entitled The Next Story: Life and Faith After the Digital Explosion.

Living in the Digital World
In the past thirty to forty years the development of digital technology has radically altered the way we as humans both perceive and engage our world. Once a premium device reserved exclusively for high powered business men mobile phones have become ubiquitous. The personal computer has replaced the television as a gathering point for families. No need to find space for 40 volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica on your shelves, just open your laptop and go to Wikipedia with your questions. Technology has made voluminous amounts of information accessible to us and allowed us to never be inaccessible to anyone…as long as we can get a good signal. Is all of this good or bad? Yes. Some of it’s good and some of it’s bad. You’ll have to decide for yourself which is which. As Christians living in today’s world we all need to give thought to our theology of technology.

Tim Challies’ The Next Story: Life and Faith after the Digital Explosion is a resource that will help us think through the topic of technology and social media and it’s affect on the world in which we live. Challies is no stranger to the digital world having been a part of the blogosphere since the early days. Nor is he categorically opposed to new technology. He recognizes that “God has gifted human beings with remarkable ability to dream, create, and invent technologies that serve us as we serve him, technologies that enable us to better serve him.”

His concern, however, is the powerful and shaping influence technology can have when we blindly introduce it into our lives and the lives of our families. Paul exhorts us to “look carefully how you walk, not as unwise but as wise making the best use of time because the days are evil. (Eph 5:15,16). To live in a circumspect manner is to give consideration to understanding the purpose for a particular technology and it’s effect on our lives before we adopt it. Challies poses this penetrating question; “What is it that draws me to the device, and when I look beneath the surface, why do I really want it?” This is not to assume our motives are sinister. They may very well be virtuous. In light of the amount of space the Scriptures give to addressing the heart; however, one would be naïve to think that are hearts aren’t regularly tempted to wander from God. (I know mine is).

Challies spends the first half of the book laying a foundation. He does this by covering thematic elements found in all technology. In his historical overview Challies traces the ever increasing pace of life beginning in the 1800s, when nothing moved faster than the speed of a horse, through the invention of the steam locomotive, that eventually made it possible to travel coast to coast, to the invention of the telegraph which connected individual communities and finally to the advent of the Internet which has made instant and worldwide communication an every day experience for most people. With the introduction of each of these technologies the human experience has changed dramatically.

In the second half of the book Challies gets specific and practical. This is where I found The Next Story most helpful. The author addresses topics such as understanding the biblical purpose of communication, the differences between mediated relationships and face-to-face relationships, the impact living in a distracted world makes on deep thinking, perspectives on the inexhaustible information that is available via the Internet and the dangers of moving between “second lives” in cyberspace and our actual lives in the real world.

Challies poses the question “are you the slave of your digital devices or are they your servants?” He reveals much of his purpose in this book when he says, “We are looking for that sweet spot where our use of technology is not just thoughtful and informed, but it is informed by the Bible, by an understanding of God’s purpose for technology.“

Digital devices aren’t going away anytime soon and this can be a good thing, depending on how we interact with them. Whether you’ve just purchased your first smart phone or you’ve been functioning in the digital world for years, The Next Story will challenge you to think biblically about your use of technology.

We are moving this Saturday "finally"! We will get the truck Friday afternoon and will start loading the truck with whatever we can. On Saturday morning we will start again @ 8am. If anyone is willing and able we would be so blessed with any help. We are hoping to get it all in one trip:)

Word of the Week: (an excerpt from Our Daily Bread by Jennifer Benson Schuldt)

Hope In Him"The virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel." ~Isaiah 7:14

The key word of Christmas is “Immanuel”— God with us!

As we drove home from a Christmas party one evening, my family and I approached a small country church nestled between glittering snowbanks. From a distance, I could see its holiday display. Strings of white lights formed the capital letters: H-O-P-E. The sight of that word shining in the darkness reminded me that Jesus is, and always has been, the hope of humankind.

Before Jesus was born, people hoped for the Messiah—the One who would shoulder their sin and intercede with God on their behalf (Isa. 53:12). They expected the Messiah to arrive through a virgin who would bear a son in Bethlehem and would name Him Immanuel, “God with us” (7:14). The night Jesus was born, their hope was fulfilled (Luke 2:1-14).
Although we’re no longer waiting for Jesus in the form of an infant, He is still the source of our hope. We watch for His second coming (Matt. 24:30); we anticipate the heavenly home He is preparing for us (John 14:2); and we dream of living with Him in His celestial city (1 Thess. 4:16). As Christians, we can look forward to the future because the baby in the manger was, and still is, “the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope” (1 Tim. 1:1).

Final Words:
Merry Christmas Brothers and Sisters in Christ! We pray this email finds you hoping in Him and not in the presents or lack of presents under the tree. Jesus is not the "Reason for the Season" He is the reason for life. Our hope is in Him every minute of every day. He gave up everything in heaven and became His very own creation, knowing His own creation would not accept Him and would ultimately hang Him upon a cross for an act He did not commit nor did He deserve. He knew this and still chose to come! The book of Isaiah was written about 200 years before Jesus was born. This Christmas, instead of just the typical Bible stories of Jesus being born in a manger, read Isaiah 53 and remember that it was the Lord's will to crush Him, His only Son. He did this because He so loved the world and wanted the world to be reconciled back to Himself. Jesus was not just a baby born in a manger, Jesus is our everything. Apart from Him, we can do nothing! May your Christmas be filled with the hope that Jesus brings to each of us!
Last week, we had a team in from Gainesville State University and had a blast taking them out on the streets every day! We had blessings poured out in abundance again and have so many people and groups to thank. If you have served us or with us this week, please know that we are grateful and that our residents here at the Garden are forever appreciative of your generosity. May you be blessed for being such a blessing to us! Today, we received all brand-new mattresses from Tempur-Pedic and have switched out every single old mattress for a brand new one! God gives us His best and we are able to give the women, children, and men of the ministry the best too! He is such a great God!
We will for sure continue street ministry on Saturday December 24th. Meet us at the Kmart parking lot off of Cleveland Ave at noon if you wish to join us. We will not be going out on Christmas because that falls on a Sunday this year but we will have service as normal at 10:30am if you would like to come and worship with us.
Lord willing, we will have another update next week! Thanks again for everything and have a beautiful Christmas hoping in Jesus Christ! Our Savior has come!!!!

IMPORTANT Children's Ministry Announcement

Hello Church Family,

Here is a reminder about the children's ministry song, which is planned for THIS Sunday, December 18, just in case we missed you with the letter. Please continue practicing the lyrics at home this week!

2's and 3/4's: (Singing "Away in a Manger.") We would like for our little ones to dress as kings, angels, shepherds, or animals from the Nativity JUST for the song. You can feel free to put on your pretty dress afterward, if you like. :) These costumes can be made VERY easily from items in your own home. For example, a pillowcase and a length of twine or a headband makes the perfect head covering for a shepherd. Please message me if you need ideas! PLEASE ARRIVE AT 9:00 ON SUNDAY TO RUN THROUGH THE SONG.

5's-10's: (Singing chorus/bridge of "He Made a Way in a Manger.") We were hoping to have the choir dress UP in holiday-type clothing. Suggestions include holiday skirts or dresses for girls and dress/khaki pants with a dress shirt or sweater that contains red, green or white. (Please do not feel the need to purchase anything new!) One of our dear church members, Marilyn Ulrich, passed away Friday night after her battle with cancer. We know she is in Heaven rejoicing with her Savior, but please continue to pray for her family as they go through this difficult time. The funeral will be held Monday, Dec. 12th at 11:00 a.m. at the Woodstock Funeral Home. Instead of sending flowers, the Ulrichs would encourage mourners to donate to The Ovarian Cancer Institute. Marilyn J. Ulrich was born on January 4, 1959 to her parents Harry and Esther Stallo in Milan, Indiana. On August 7, 1982 she married the love of her life Dan Ulrich and together they had three children: Philip, Arielle, and Kurt. Marilyn was redeemed by her Savior, Jesus Christ over thirty two years ago and she has spent those years faithfully serving Him. She will be missed by all.

Sovereign Grace Church will be celebrating Christ's birth by holding a potluck directly following the Sunday service. Bring lunch for your family to share. Drinks and desserts will be provided. FOI Update

Hello Church Family,

We had our last FOI Bible study of the semester this past Sunday at Philip Ulrich’s apartment. Five of our Chinese friends were with us. At the end of the Gospel presentation--in which we urged our friends to believe in Jesus--we asked each of them to tell us where they were in relation to the things we have been discussing over the last 8 to 10 weeks. All five of them expressed quite openly things that they were learning as well as some reservations they have. It appears that the Holy Spirit is doing serious work in each of their lives, drawing them to Christ for salvation. I want to relay to you what “Albert” (his Chinese name is Xizhong Lou) shared. (Albert is a visiting professor with a PhD in Telecommunications/Electronics. His wife, Daisy, who has a PhD in Computer Science and whose expertise is in artificial intelligence, is also here with him.) He said something like this:

I have lots to say. The first thing is this. Being in the field that I am, I have read a lot in Physics. From all my study and reading, I have known that evolution does not explain the complexity of our universe. And when I came here and joined the Bible Study, I learned that God created the world. The second is this. In my country, in elementary and middle school I was taught about Communism, with all of its promises of a perfect world. But when I grew up, I realized that all of Communism’s promises were empty. The Story of God has given me a new hope, a new promise. The third thing: I have never been hurt – by my government, my job, or my family. But if my wife & I become Christians, I am afraid that when we go back to China, we will experience hurt.

Albert and his wife are wrestling with the cost of believing in and following Jesus. Pray that they will come to know and embrace HIM as the Greatest Treasure of all!

Resurgence Meeting Place for Saturday

This Saturday, Nov. 19th, at 12:30 p.m. we will meet in the shopping center(parking lot) behind Chili's & Longhorns on Eagle Drive. From there, we will go to a local Operation Christmas Child warehouse off Moonstation Road in Kennesaw and assist packing the shoe boxes into larger boxes that will be sent to the children. Please bring $5 as we will meet at Menchies in Towne Lake afterward for a time of fellowship.

The Snells have room in the van for 8 people to ride with them. We plan to be at Menchies between 2:15-2:30 p.m. Parents who are unable to join us at the warehouse may meet us afterward at Menchies and enjoy a time of fellowship & plan to pick up their young adult.

Please review the following information if missed the red letters that were available at children’s ministry check-in OR if you still have questions.

What YOU need to do BEFORE the party:

1. RSVP to Anita Padgett (e-mail OR facebook) with the number of family members participating. Moms and dads, too! mrspadgett@gmail.com

2. Gather one standard-sized shoebox for each family member packing. The clear plastic shoeboxes encouraged by OCC are available at Dollar Tree.

3. Decide if you would like to pack for a boy or a girl and determine the age range (2-4, 5-9. 11-14). (Apparently, 10-14 boys receive the least.)

4. Purchase items to load into shoeboxes—toys, hard candy, school supplies, toiletries, and other small gifts. NO liquids, breakables, food, chocolate or weapons-related items.

5. Complete your donation in advance online at https://www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/OCC/followyourbox/

6. PRINT the tracking labels provided if you have chosen to donate using the “Follow Your Box” feature. So cool for your kids to track!

7. OR…if you prefer, you may write a personal check ($7 each, may be combined). Checks will need to placed in an envelope (with form mentioned below) and taped to the completed box.

What WE will provide/do AT the party:

1. A pizza lunch for the RSVP number in your family.

2. Special video presentation. We’ll enjoy a short film that will inspire both you and your kids about partnering with Samaritan’s Purse as they seek to share the gospel with children all over the world.

3. Boy/Girl labels for your shoeboxes.

4. Donation forms/envelopes for those writing personal checks.

5. Photograph of your child. These will be taken during Sunday school and then printed—using one-hour service—before the packing party ends.

6. Card-making supplies. We’ll have a station set up for kids to create a special note to include in their shoebox. We will also provide “All About Me” pages, if desired.

7. Wrapping supplies. We’ll have a station with Christmas paper, scissors and tape if you wish to wrap your box. Wrap top separately!

8. Large rubber bands for securing your box.

9. Prayer time. We’ll take the time to gather as a group to pray over our boxes, asking for Jesus Himself to touch the recipients with His love.

10. Delivery to the OCC warehouse. We’ll collect all of the boxes and transport them to our local drop-off location.

This week's book highlight comes from Tullian Tchividjian and is entitled Jesus + Nothing = Everything.

A proclamation of Christ's sufficiency that frees us from self-righteousness and keeps us anchored through storms.

Jesus + Nothing = Everything is the equation that Tullian Tchividjian took away from a year of great trial and turmoil. Christians are disciples of Christ. Since our entire identity is defined by Christ, we do well to think carefully about what it means to be a disciple. Bill Clem, an elder at Mars Hill Church in Seattle, looks closely at the characteristics of discipleship.

Originally written as a text for the Resurgence Training Program (Re: Train), Disciple grounds our identity as disciples in the storyline of the Bible. Careful not to be overly prescriptive, Clem instead uses Scripture and real-life stories to illustrate the essential elements of Christian discipleship. As a major component of this, they have invited an outside conciliation ministry to solicit and assess input from Sovereign Grace church members about where change may be needed in SGM and its churches. And that includes you.

If you have insights that you believe would contribute to a well-rounded assessment of SGM, we would love to have your voice heard. There are roughly 100 churches in SGM, and perspective from all of them, including ours, will be critical to SGM learning as much as possible through this process.

This week's book highlight is Give Them Grace by Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson.

How are parents to raise children so they don't become Pharisees (legalists) or prodigals (rebels)? It's all about grace-filled, gospel-driven parenting, says the mother/daughter team of Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson. Christian parents, in their desire to raise godly children, can tend toward rule-centered discipline. There is, however, a far more effective method--a grace-motivated approach that begins with the glorious truth of God's love for sinners.

FOI Welcome Picnic-This Saturday

Yesterday (Monday), there were about 80 new students at the International Student Orientation at KSU. Add to that the 70 new students at SPSU's orientation last Friday, along with all the returning students from last year, and we have lots of opportunities for friendship and the Gospel before us! We are anticipating that many of these students will come to our FOI WELCOME PICNIC this comingSaturday, Aug 20, from 4:30-8:30 pm.

Location: "Liberty Park" at Liberty Church. (Directions: Going south on Hwy 41, Liberty Church is on the right side, about 1/2 mile south of Barrett Pkwy, just before you get to Bells Ferry Rd. Look for all the flags flying!)

This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with some students and begin a friendship. This is also the time when we invite them to participate in our investigative Bible Studies.

Basic schedule:
4:30 pick up students at SPSU and KSU
5:00 cookout at Liberty Park
Group mixers and games to connect Americans with int'l students
8:00 clean up and take students back home.

HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE:
Pray . . . for Holy Spirit-directed connections with students and for many to sign up for the Bible Studies.
Come . . . bring your family and build some new friendships for the sake of the Gospel.
Transportation . . . to and from the universities. (We need several cars/vans and drivers.)
Provide FOOD (please bring to the Friesens' home by 2:00 or to Liberty by 4:00).
-- The Liberty Church folks will be providing the burgers & dogs, buns & condiments, paper goods.
-- The CBC folks will be bringing chips, salads, & some desserts.
-- All the rest of us (including SGCers) have been asked to bring DESSERTS(either cookies or brownies) and DRINKS (either cans of soda or bottles of water). (If it is easier for you to contribute $10 for the drinks, we would be glad to purchase them, since we'll have to do some shopping for other things anyway.)

We know that most people do not have the resources to help us with a vehicle but we know that God owns everything and is in everything and we are asking you to join us in praying for this need.
- We need cleaning supplies right now- Think about all the things you run your house with and multiply it by 100!

- Hygiene items for both the Garden and the streets- this week we are able to pass out hundreds of hygiene items to those living on the streets of Atlanta but there is still much need. Those that receive food stamps can usually by food for their families but not hygiene items. Think about living under a bridge and not even having access to a bar of soap!

"Hello friends... I have a favor to ask you. I have recently been offered a wonderful promotional opportunity with my employer, GE. The new role is exactly the role I have been wanting and praying for and I am very excited that it was offered to me. The only concern is that I would have to travel about 50% of the time - maybe every other week, primarily to the business HQ offices in Connecticut.

Given my current situation, it would be difficult for me to take this role with the travel requirements unless I am able to find someone who can live with me and my family to help out when I travel.

Therefore, I am looking for a mature Christian female (over the age of 21) who would benefit from free room & board in exchange for helping out around my home with my two kids (Christian - 16 and Olivia - 12) when I am traveling for work. The helping out would include ensuring the kids are where they are supposed to be when they are supposed to be there (including some driving to/from afterschool activities), ensuring their homework is completed, they eat a decent dinner, have what they need for school in the morning and that they get up and out the door in time for school. Their would be no problem with working a day-time job, and she would not have any responsibilities on evenings/weekends when the kids are with their dad or when I'm home... it would just be her home. We live in Towne Lake Hills East in a roomy and comfortable home. The accommodations would be the guest bedroom in the basement for the time-being, but would likely be the guest room on the main floor eventually, since that room has a full-bath and the basement only has a half-bath.

There would be a possibility of earning some money in addition to free room and board if she is interested in doing extras around the house such as some laundry, cooking, picking up, etc. - and if she's good at math, tutoring for my 12-year-old would definitely be something I'd pay extra for! Mileage or fuel for driving would also be reimbursed. There would be some restrictions while the person is here... no drinking, no smoking, no over-night guests... but really, other than that, it would be a pretty flexible arrangement. The ideal person would be a post-graduate student, or a student in grad school who is just starting out in their professional life who has either a full-time or part-time job during the day, but plenty of flexible time in the evenings."

Considering the countless ways God revealed Himself during my mission trip to the Dominican Republic and Haiti, I am overwhelmed with gratefulness in my heart. July 18th-25th, I joined a team of 10 individuals and traveled to Santiago, Dominican Republic, and to Haiti to encounter the plans God had in store. One of the first stand-out blessings of my trip was the privilege to serve alongside the team of people God carefully and purposefully put together. It was no coincidence that God allowed me and my sister, Jordan, to share the experience with each other, as well as side-by-side our new friends who desired to carry Jesus' name to the ends of the earth. The first part of my trip, was spent in Santiago where our team was hosted by Iglesia Cristiana Oasis Church; a church family who had hearts that reflected the ultimate Servant. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday my team and I held a VBS at a nearby park in the downtown area of Santiago. Children who were forced to work in the streets gathered at Parque Duarte to sing worship songs, learn Bible verses, hear the Gospel message preached through a puppet show, and escape their rough home lives, if they even had home lives at all. The children who came to the VBS meetings ranged in age from 5-16, but each and every one was attentive to the activities our team organized, but more importantly to the Word of God being proclaimed in their language. None of the children who attended the VBS spoke English, like the majority of other people we encountered in the Dominican. Yet, God used the language barrier not as an obstacle, but as a reminder of my incapability to accomplish anything in my own power. God was so faithful to give me the words to speak and the means of understanding His people who He ultimately desired to minister to. Our team's leaders, Carmen and Miguel, guided our team with their compassionate hearts to reach others with God's love.

During the evenings of our time spent in the Dominican, our team joined the Oasis church in speaking to teachers in the church and community, spurring on the small group leaders of the church body, and sharing with the youth and young married couples of the church. On Wednesday night, my team and I attended a small group for the young people in the church. The Godly character of the younger individuals was evident to all and boldly glorified Jesus Christ. During the meeting, the group sang familiar songs like, "Glories of Calvary" and "Blessed Be Your Name" in Spanish while my team sang the same songs in English. It was such a powerful moment of witnessing two cultures, languages, and peoples joining together to praise the name of the Lord. God spoke to my heart with the Scripture in Philippians saying "every tongue will confess that Jesus is the Lord of all." I walked away from the meeting resting in the promise that I will be worshipping with my brothers in sisters in the Dominican Republic again one day in Heaven. The Oasis church body quickly gained a precious place in my heart as their Biblical example of humility, hospitality, and unconditional love challenged me and encouraged me greatly throughout my time there.

The last half of my trip was spent in Haiti. I do not even possess the words to speak of all God did in my heart during my time in one of the poorest countries in the world. My team and I had the humbling opportunity to visit and minister to a village in the outskirts of the city. We partnered with a missionary couple who have given up their comfortable lives in the US for the sake of the Gospel, as they serve everyday in the Haitian village we visited. Faced with yet another language, Haitian Creole, God was faithful to provide translators to share the Word of God with the hundreds of children who gathered together. God showed me just how powerful His love can be, even without any words involved. One of the most compelling moments during my time in Haiti was when the team and I provided medical attention to the mass of needy children and women in the village. The Haitian people were desperate and welcomed all the medical assistance we could give them, even the simplest of tasks, like cleaning and bandaging a cut. The shelters, surroundings, and lack of resources the people were faced with, challenged my perspectives and my heart of gratefulness. I found myself more amazed than ever before at the thought of God choosing me, a lowly sinner and an enemy, to be welcomed into His perfect Kingdom and seated at His table. The people in Haiti will always hold a unique place in my heart. God became greater in my eyes throughout the course of my trip, worshipping alongside brothers and sisters who speak another language, yet trust in the same unshakable truth. Experiencing His kingdom going forth to all peoples first-hand, the Lord allowed my eyes to be opened to my selfishness in my own little world, and revealed the mercies of His great Kingdom on a grand scale. No matter what language Jesus' name is spoken, it has power to save. Whether it is said "En el hombre de Jesus," like the Dominicans, or "Nan non Jezi a" as it is said in Haitian Creole, may all that I do and say be done "In the name of Jesus."

The time I spent in the Dominican Republic will never be forgotten. I met many new brothers and sisters in Christ, from both the church there and the teams from churches in the Southeast US. My host family was the head pastor of Christiana Iglesias Oasis. Unfortunately the girls took up too much space in the house so three other men and I stayed in an apartment close to his house. Each day at 7:00 we met at the church, packed into a van and headed of to Villa Alta Gracia, a large yet poor community crammed onto the side of the mountains. Even though the majority of my time was spent building a school, laboring with the Dominicans was a unique experience. I couldn’t even talk to most of the people there properly, but we all soon worked together without needing to speak much. One day I went out to spread the gospel with Jesse, a man from one of the teams. That man had absolutely no fear of man; if anybody said hi to us, he would bring us over to them, ask them how they were, and then ask if they were saved. One time he led us to a group of young men playing pool. Jesse pretty much walked over, said ‘hey, how’s it going?’ then pulled out his Bible and read John 3:16. I was blown away by his boldness; I aspire to be like him. Among the people that I might there I made many good friends that I will never forget. I am thankful for God and the people that made this mission trip happen.

My trip to the Dominican Republic was fantastic and better than I ever imagined it would be. God blessed my trip so much and was with me every step of the way. I am so thankful to God for letting me have this experience and protecting me through it.

On the last couple of days before I left, I began to feel anxious and nervous. I surprised myself with feeling this way because before, I had been so excited that I hadn’t even thought about how I was going out of the country and going into a whole other world. I spent a lot of time praying to God for peace and the verse Philippians 4:6 immediately came to me. This verse says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” This verse was just what I needed, it reminded me that God is in control of everything and the best thing for me to do when I was feeling anxious was to take it to him through prayer.

While I was in the Dominican Republic, we did a VBS for four days for kids who live on the streets or are very poor. Kids have a very special place in my heart so I loved getting the opportunity to spend time with them and give the kids the care they needed. We did many fun things with the kids, we taught songs and bible verses; we gave them food, and just talked to them and cared for them. These kids did not have a lot but were all so joyful and always had huge smiles on their faces. One day, we got a chance to go and see where some of the kids that came to the VBS lived. This was a very eye opening moment for me. They all lived in small wooden houses and in very bad environments. Just seeing all this made me appreciate my family, where I live, and everything else God has given me.

One of the nights my team and I were in the Dominican Republic, we were given the opportunity to go to a youth group for a church that helped us through the trip. This was an amazing experience. The first thing we did was worship God. Everybody except for the people in my group spoke Spanish, so when we worshiped they sang in Spanish. Fortunately, they sang many songs that we sing at Sovereign Grace. So while the Dominican people sang in Spanish we all sang in English. You would never know how beautiful this sounds until you are right there in the moment. We all described it as a little glimpse of heaven. We are both from totally different countries but we all praise the same wonderful God. The youth’s passion for the Lord was incredible and so evident in every single one of them. One of the qualities that stood out to me, which was in a lot of the teens there, was their no fear of man. They did not care at all what others thought of them, they only cared what God thought of them. I know God brought me to that youth group to show me that example and to encourage me to work on it in my own life.

That last two days I was on my trip, I was given the opportunity to visit Haiti. This was a little intimidating at first for me. I was anxious to get there but I was also trying to prepare myself for the state of poverty I would see. When I was in Haiti, we went to a village for both days. This village had so many kids in it that we couldn’t even count them all. These kids all ranged from the ages of 1 to 14. They all lived in a total number of four huts that wouldn’t even be considered a house. It was so heartbreaking to see how little these kids had. Some of the kids there didn’t even have clothes on because they didn’t have any. They were dirty, malnourished, and unhealthy. But again, even though they had nothing they were still as joyful as they could be. Their joyfulness is God’s light shining through them. While we were there we did a lot of the same things that we did at the VBS. We played with them, taught them songs, did a puppet show for them, and also cleaned their cuts or did any other medical treatment they needed. We mostly just wanted to care for these kids and love on them. They enjoyed every little thing we did and were so grateful for it. These kids will always have a special place in my heart and I will never forget their joyful spirits.

Being back here in America for these past couple of days, I have become so much more grateful for everything I have. My trip far more exceeded any of my expectations. This was the one trip that I did not want to leave when it was time to go. I made many long-lasting relationships and am so grateful to have met all those wonderful people. God has shown me just how big he is during this trip. He is made known to everyone whether it’s us here at sovereign grace, the church in the Dominican Republic, or a small village in Haiti. He is so great and I feel so honored to be able to worship the one true God.

A Voyage Discovery by Derek Thomas

This book is designed to portray biblical spirituality as believers in the God of the Bible express it. It takes a collection of fifteen psalms, conveniently lumped together in the Hebrew canon. The collection of Psalms 120-134 all bear the same title: A Song of Ascents.

Designed to go through the 14 Psalms in 14 days: Each day, spending time in one of these psalms. Read the psalm, pray over it, make notes from what you think God might be teaching you. As you read the chapter for that day, keep a journal. Donald Whitney has written:

A journal is one of the best places for charting your progress in the Spiritual Disciplines and for holding yourself accountable to your goals.

At the end of each psalm there are some questions to ‘stir the juices', as it were. There are no strict rules, except the need for honesty. Writing down how we respond to God's teaching can stir the affections in a way that nothing else can.

We are grateful to welcome Aron Osborne to preach on Sunday, July 31st. Here is a little more about him:

Aron Osborne served for over 10 years as the senior pastor of Grace Community Church in Souderton, PA. Aron attended and graduated from the Sovereign Grace Pastor’s College in May of 1998. He was sent out with a team to plant the church in the fall of 1999. In 2003 he also began serving Sovereign Grace Ministries as a Regional Leadership Team Overseer serving 5 Sovereign Grace Churches, and as of 2008 this responsibility extended to the oversight of 18 Sovereign Grace Churches in the Northeast Region of the United States and Eastern Canada. In December of 2010, Aron followed the Lord’s leading to begin oversight of the sixteen Sovereign Grace Churches in the Southern Region of the United States and Caribbean. They are currently settling into their new home in Orlando, FL and enjoying getting to know the folks of Metro Life Church. Aron and his wife Melissa have been married for almost 15 years and have 4 children.

Hello Church Family,

Tim Keller and David Powlison recently collaborated to provide some biblical wisdom and guidelines on speech and relationships. Our thinking was that perhaps bloggers would want to adopt these and spread the word about them as a way, in Keller’s words, to “spiritually season Christian conversation in cyberspace.”

So if this perspective resonates with you (and I hope it does), I’d encourage you to pass it along or post it on your blog.

May the Lord help each of us to have truth-in-love speech that is always gracious, salt-seasoned, gentle, respectful, peaceful, and edifying (Colossians 4:6, Ephesians 4:15, Romans 14:19)

Congratulations to the Williams family on the birth of their son, Isaac Christopher. Isaac was born on July 20th, was twenty one inches long and weighed eight pounds and one ounce.

We are so grateful for the lunch supplies that came in last week but passing out over 3500 lunches last week, we are still in need of more! We need lunch meat, chips, snacks, drinks, sandwich bags, and grocery bags!
Cleaning supplies and hygiene items of all kinds!
Kitchen Needs: evaporated milk, cherries, pineapples, butter, sugar, brown sugar, olive oil, vinyl gloves, aluminum foil, paper plates/bowls/cups, and plastic spoons
Monetary gifts and gas cards! (We spend more than $1000.00 on gas each week!)
A new bus for the ministry and a 28 foot box truck with lift gate for donations

Join us this Sunday, July 17 from 7:00-9:30 p.m. for an informal night of learning as various ladies in the church share their areas of expertise. Water Baptism

We will be having a water baptism on Sunday, August 21. If you are interested in being baptized, please sign-up at the New Members Service table and we will contact you about scheduling a pastoral interview.

Here is a brief outline of the book:
