Book Highlight: Jesus + Nothing = Everything

Hello Church Family,

This week's book highlight comes from Tullian Tchividjian and is entitled Jesus + Nothing = Everything.

A proclamation of Christ's sufficiency that frees us from self-righteousness and keeps us anchored through storms.

Jesus + Nothing = Everything is the equation that Tullian Tchividjian took away from a year of great trial and turmoil. In this book he describes the bitter divisions that soured the beginning of his pastorate at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church and the personal anchor that he found in the overwhelming power of the gospel. The book of Colossians forms the basis of Tchividjian's call for Christians to rediscover the gospel and continually reorient their lives around Jesus.

Tchividjian insists that many who assume they understand the gospel fail to actually apply its riches to their lives. He takes particular aim at self-righteousness, which emphasizes moral behavior while ignoring gospel indicatives. In contrast, Tchividjian delivers a strong grip of the gospel and the radical freedom and peace that are only then possible. This book delves into the profound theological truths of the gospel, yet the message is intensely practical--Tchividjian sounds the call for believers to lean hard on Christ in every area of every day.

Book Highlight: Disciple-Getting Your Identity From Jesus

Hello Church Family,

Here is this week's book highlight from author Bill Clem:

This guide looks at the essential elements of discipleship while encouraging readers to think and journal through Scripture.

Christians are disciples of Christ. Since our entire identity is defined by Christ, we do well to think carefully about what it means to be a disciple. Bill Clem, an elder at Mars Hill Church in Seattle, looks closely at the characteristics of discipleship.

Originally written as a text for the Resurgence Training Program (Re: Train), Disciple grounds our identity as disciples in the storyline of the Bible. Careful not to be overly prescriptive, Clem instead uses Scripture and real-life stories to illustrate the essential elements of Christian discipleship. He does so by looking at characteristics and distortions of image, worship, community, and mission. He finishes with a practical chapter on weekly planning and a chapter on the multiplication of disciples. Each chapter ends with an assignment in which Clem encourages readers to journal through Scripture passages built around a particular theme. Both veteran and new followers of Jesus will benefit from this comprehensive look at what it means to be a disciple.

Message From Dave Harvey

Hello Church Family,

The following is a message from one of our SGM leaders, Dave Harvey:

Sovereign Grace Ministries is undergoing an assessment process meant to identify strengths and weaknesses. As a major component of this, they have invited an outside conciliation ministry to solicit and assess input from Sovereign Grace church members about where change may be needed in SGM and its churches. And that includes you.

If you have insights that you believe would contribute to a well-rounded assessment of SGM, we would love to have your voice heard. There are roughly 100 churches in SGM, and perspective from all of them, including ours, will be critical to SGM learning as much as possible through this process.

If you’d like to know more about participating, read Dave Harvey’s announcement (http://bit.ly/sgm-input) and watch the SGM blog for related updates. And please pray that God’s grace and peace continue to multiply in Sovereign Grace churches.
